Indoor vs Outdoor LED Lights: Key Differences You Must Know

Many customers mistakenly install indoor flush lights and decorative string lights outdoors, leading to water ingress, short circuit and light burnout within 3-6 months. Indoor and outdoor LED lights cannot be used interchangeably, mainly differing in waterproof rating, heat dissipation and shell material.

1. IP Waterproof Rating Difference

  • Indoor Lights (Flush ceiling, indoor decorative lamp): IP20-IP40. Only dust-proof, not rainproof. Cannot contact splashing water.
  • Outdoor Lights (Garden, Patio, Wall Lights): IP54-IP65. Rainproof, dustproof, anti-sun exposure, adapt to all-weather outdoor environment.

2. Shell & Heat Dissipation

Indoor lamps use thin PC plastic, designed for room constant temperature. Outdoor lamps use thick aluminum alloy and UV-resistant PC to prevent yellowing under long-term sunlight.

3. Internal Driver Structure

Outdoor built-in drivers have moisture-proof glue filling, while indoor drivers are exposed. Exposed drivers will corrode rapidly in humid outdoor air.

Safety Reminder

Never install IP40 indoor decorative lights on balconies, courtyards or eaves. Choose dedicated IP54 balcony waterproof decorative lights for semi-outdoor spaces.
